PLA filament at a glance

PLA is one of the easiest FDM/FFF filaments to print. It is known for clean detail, low warping, low odor, and reliable results on most hobby and professional desktop printers. PLA is best for prototypes, display models, organizers, decorative parts, cosplay pieces, jigs, and indoor functional prints that will not be exposed to high heat.

Nozzle temperature 190-220 deg C
Build plate temperature 45-60 deg C, or room temperature on a well-prepared surface
Print speed 40-70 mm/s to start; slow down for small details or silk finishes
Cooling fan 100% after the first few layers
Layer height 0.12-0.28 mm with a 0.4 mm nozzle
First layer speed 15-25 mm/s
Retraction Start with your printer profile, then tune in small steps if stringing appears

Printing tips for better PLA results

  • Dial in the first layer. A smooth, even first layer is the biggest factor for good adhesion. If lines are barely touching, lower the nozzle slightly. If the surface looks rough or scraped, raise it slightly.
  • Use cooling for detail. PLA usually benefits from strong part cooling after the first few layers, especially on bridges, overhangs, and small features.
  • Lower the temperature for stringing. If you see wispy strings, try reducing nozzle temperature by 5 deg C at a time and check retraction settings.
  • Slow down silk or glossy PLA. Silk PLA often looks best at slightly slower speeds, giving the material time to flow evenly and show its shine.
  • Keep filament dry. Moist PLA can pop, hiss, string, or create rough surfaces. Store spools in a sealed bag or dry box with desiccant.
  • Avoid high-heat use. PLA can soften in hot cars, direct sunlight, or warm mechanical environments. Choose PETG, ABS, ASA, or nylon for higher-temperature applications.

Quick troubleshooting guide

  • Poor bed adhesion: clean the build plate, slow the first layer, slightly increase bed temperature, or adjust Z offset.
  • Stringing: lower nozzle temperature, dry the filament, and tune retraction distance and speed.
  • Gaps or under-extrusion: check nozzle temperature, filament path resistance, nozzle clogs, and slicer flow settings.
  • Blobs or rough corners: reduce temperature slightly, tune pressure advance or linear advance if available, and check retraction.
  • Warped corners: use a clean bed, add a brim, avoid drafts, and keep the first layer consistent.

Storage and handling

For the best print quality, store PLA in a sealed container with desiccant when it is not in use. If a spool has absorbed moisture, dry it gently at 40-45 deg C for 4-6 hours, then let it cool in a dry container before printing.
